Apple AirPods Pro Service Program for Sound Issues (Recall)

Untitled

Are you having ANY of the following issues with either;

  1. Cracking or static sounds that increase in loud environments

  2. Active Noise Cancelling not working properly, such as a loss of bass or an increase in background sounds

for your AirPods Pro?

You are in luck. Apple announced a recall for such issues, for all AirPods manufactured before October 2020, so literally everyone who has bought a pair of AirPods Pro so far are likely covered.

I went to Apple Orchard today to get my AirPods Pro exchanged, and as usual the process is smooth and fast. Check-in, sit at the table, genius comes and did an inspection of my AirPods Pro, and promptly exchanged them after a short chat.

Do you have any problems with your AirPods Pro? Get them exchanged today! Remember to book an appointment on Apple’s site or using the Apple Support app first as it is unlikely you will be able to get a same-day appointment if you try to do a walk-in.

If you are instead aiming to buy a full size set of headphones, rumors are that Apple might announce something known as the “AirPods Studio” during their November event.

The Biggest Feature of Android 10….

..is the ability to turn on the “iPhone Bar” option in the Gestures settings to turn your Pixel/Android phone into a cheap iPhone!

(Update: Delayed again till July) Powerbeats Pro to be delayed outside of US and Canada

Only the United States and Canada will be getting the Powerbeats Pro in May, while other “launch” countries like Japan and Singapore will have theirs starting from June, due to Beats’ wishes to “make sure that the product quality is up to notch”.

The first units will also only be available in black with other countries following, similar to the initial launch of BeatsX two years ago.

Beats also mentioned that Lightning will slowly replace micro usb as the default charging connector for their products over time.

Update: Apple has announced that the Powerbeats Pro will be available for preorder on the US and Canada sites on May 3rd with release on May 10. As previously reported here other launch countries will follow suit in June.

Update again: Beats just announced the remaining “launch countries” will now get the black model in July.

Happy 40th Anniversary, Apple!

Like others, I thought it will be fitting for me to recount some simple milestones in how I got started in Macs and Apple.

iBook 1

This is my very first Mac – the iBook G4 12-inch.

I could not remember exactly which generation it was, except for the fact that I took ownership of it in December 2004. It was the very last one made in Taiwan before the production was shifted to China.

It was the cheapest computer (even among the PCs!) at the time that my university offered, and I got one partly for that reason (also receiving the news around the same time that my cousin ordered the almost 4000 dollar 12-inch Powerbook).

I did not like Mac OS X at the start, and it took me a while before I grew to like it, and then love it. Mingling among other Apple users (there were very very few of them in school then) helped, and I eventually got involved in MacNUS.

This was me during one of the Matriculation Notebook Fairs held at the Yusof Ishak Hall, I was tending the Apple (Diversitec) booth of course. I spend most of my time drinking iced tea since there were not many customers on most days then.

iBook + LG setup 3

Eventually this became my official room setup, after finding out the wonders of screen spanning on Mac OS X. I purchased a Apple Pro Keyboard (the white one) and paired it with probably the Razer Pro mouse for the setup.

iMac Setup 1

Then my very first desktop Mac appeared in my life – the 2007 Aluminium iMac 24-inch. This was the very first of the aluminium iMacs that will span all the time until today.

iMac Setup 4

The iBook got relegated to being the “side desk computer”. For the first time there was not a single Windows computer in my room.

By the way, in case you are wondering, all my Macs are still working fine today. The 2007 iMac is still in regular use on my desk, especially for podcast production, and my iBook is still running fine as well.

This eventually became the setup (before I started buying other newer Macs) involving my first Mac notebook and Mac desktop. Can you spot the iPods?

I also got to know some of my longest friends since getting involved with the local Mac User Group. The group is largely dead, but three of the friends I got to know then I still talk to on a very regular basis.

What is your Apple story?

What to do if your Mac is hit by the Apple Silent Ethernet Killer Update aka “031-51913 Incompatible Kernel Extension Configuration Data 3.28.1” [Updated]

“If you have access to a system that wasn’t updated with Ethernet Killer:

Go to System/Library/Extensions/AppleKextExcludeList.kext and copy the working file extension and transfer the file over to your corrupted computer or partition

Turn off System Integrity Protection (SIP) by restarting in recovery mode (command-R) and go under Utility in the top menu and open Terminal app.

Type in “csrutil disable” and return.

Restart computer and you now with be able to delete the bad
AppleKextExcludeList.kext and drop in the good AppleKextExcludeList.kext

Restart and Ethernet will be recognized again.

Turn the SIP back on by doing step 2 and 3 again but type in “csrutil enable”

Update: Apple has published the official fix in this support document.

MacRyu.com is Content Blocker Friendly!

Web ads have never made me a single cent, and I doubt they ever will. And I don’t care.

MacRyu.com has always been made to look and work the exact way I want it to be, and I will never litter it with fugly banner ads.

Please feel free to run your content blockers, Peace, Crystal, Purity, all of them.

Or even better, just read via RSS.

The silly people making a big big fuss recently don’t get it – we never read their stuff with ads on in the first place thanks to RSS.

And I can’t help but think Marco Arment is making a big mistake taking Peace off the App Store.

In fact, if anything, high profile Marco just further increased the demand/appetite for ad blockers by iOS users fearing Crystal or Purity doing another “Marco”.

Registration of Interest for iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus for all telcos

If you have missed Apple’s preorders for the new iPhones last Saturday, or if you buy your annual iPhones from the local telcos like most of us, here are the various links for registering your interest to purchase this year’s iPhones.

Singtel

Starhub – Preorder closes 16th Sep, 12pm.

M1 – Registration now closed.

Unlike previous years, it seems like this year, at least for Starhub and M1, the telcos will be doing a staggered registration process where groups of customers will be invited to pre-purchase the iPhone online at differing time and dates, probably to prevent the annual server-crashing preorder load.
