Ryu and Daniel came back after 2 months of hiatus for an epic 2-hour rant about WWDC. This was recorded pre-WWDC.
ExFAT 6: The 2-hour Rant
Posted June 16th, 2016 by Ryu at 10:27 pm in ExFAT Podcast and Podcasts. 0 CommentsMajor changes coming to MacOS, iOS, watchOS and tvOS during WWDC 2016
Posted June 7th, 2016 by Ryu at 4:28 am in iOS, MacOS, Rumors and WWDC. 0 CommentsRight from the mouth of Mark Gurman (during the Jay and Fared Show Podcast), first reported by O’Grady’s Powerpage;
-
No hardware announcements (that we already know)
-
Siri in MacOS, to be featured in top right corner alongside Spotlight
-
iOS Design Refresh with more colors – this is big. There are still many who insists that iOS 7 to 9 have been pretty bland and boring design-wise, coming from design powerhouse Apple, and refreshing the UI will definitely help in the looks department.
-
Notifications will change (among other iOS system tweaks). Probably for the sake of watchOS 3, since the current less-than-perfect notification system is weighing watchOS 2 down.
-
Big enhancement to Photos both on iOS and MacOS (to fend off Google Photos, as well as address the demise of Aperture somewhat. After all, Google Photo’s editing features are worked on by the former team at Nik.
-
Redesigned Apple Music. (Whatever, just bring back the old Music app please)
-
New encryption abilities (Wow).
-
Send money to others through iMessage
This was recorded late March, and was released this late due to some personal issues I(Ryu) had.
It was an uneventful March Apple event, and neither of us were really pumped up about it, making for a really lethargic sounding episode.
We are sorry about it.
The next episode will be better, we promise.
iPhone 7? Maybe not
Posted April 5th, 2016 by Ryu at 12:19 pm in iPhone, iPhone 7 and Rumors. 0 CommentsFor all it is worth, early rumors of the next iPhone are showing something different about Apple’s strategy this time round – iPhone 7 might be the iPhone 6ss.
Nothing says more about a new iPhone being “new” than a need to buy a new case for it.
Right now the rumors are;
- Same industrial design (aka phone body shape and size) with the exception of redesigned antenna lines
-
Dual-lens cameras on a brand new iPhone Pro, which will be the higher spec-ed model of a iPhone 7 Plus
-
Will underwhelm. LOL.
Kind of a bummer.
Well, it is not like real iOS people are going to jump ship to Android all of a sudden, and the random customers who do will eventually come back when a nicer iPhone comes around in a few years’ time, so no big deal I guess.
Happy 40th Anniversary, Apple!
Posted April 3rd, 2016 by Ryu at 4:39 pm in Uncategorized. 0 CommentsLike others, I thought it will be fitting for me to recount some simple milestones in how I got started in Macs and Apple.
This is my very first Mac – the iBook G4 12-inch.
I could not remember exactly which generation it was, except for the fact that I took ownership of it in December 2004. It was the very last one made in Taiwan before the production was shifted to China.
It was the cheapest computer (even among the PCs!) at the time that my university offered, and I got one partly for that reason (also receiving the news around the same time that my cousin ordered the almost 4000 dollar 12-inch Powerbook).
I did not like Mac OS X at the start, and it took me a while before I grew to like it, and then love it. Mingling among other Apple users (there were very very few of them in school then) helped, and I eventually got involved in MacNUS.
This was me during one of the Matriculation Notebook Fairs held at the Yusof Ishak Hall, I was tending the Apple (Diversitec) booth of course. I spend most of my time drinking iced tea since there were not many customers on most days then.
Eventually this became my official room setup, after finding out the wonders of screen spanning on Mac OS X. I purchased a Apple Pro Keyboard (the white one) and paired it with probably the Razer Pro mouse for the setup.
Then my very first desktop Mac appeared in my life – the 2007 Aluminium iMac 24-inch. This was the very first of the aluminium iMacs that will span all the time until today.
The iBook got relegated to being the “side desk computer”. For the first time there was not a single Windows computer in my room.
By the way, in case you are wondering, all my Macs are still working fine today. The 2007 iMac is still in regular use on my desk, especially for podcast production, and my iBook is still running fine as well.
This eventually became the setup (before I started buying other newer Macs) involving my first Mac notebook and Mac desktop. Can you spot the iPods?
I also got to know some of my longest friends since getting involved with the local Mac User Group. The group is largely dead, but three of the friends I got to know then I still talk to on a very regular basis.
What is your Apple story?
The Progress that watchOS 2.2 brought us…

This is why you cannot hire an ex-Adobe guy to run your software team, especially when the fellow was behind the worst piece of junk in the software world – Flash.
ExFAT 4: 4 inch iPhone again?
Posted March 12th, 2016 by Ryu at 3:26 pm in ExFAT Podcast. 0 CommentsAfter a long long Chinese New Year break, Daniel and I are finally back for the first ExFAT episode of 2016.
We talk about MWC, and (non)innovative every release at MWC is, the FBI vs Apple case, suddenly-dead Ethernet ports and speculate about the upcoming Apple event.
What to do if your Mac is hit by the Apple Silent Ethernet Killer Update aka “031-51913 Incompatible Kernel Extension Configuration Data 3.28.1” [Updated]
Posted February 28th, 2016 by Ryu at 7:07 am in Uncategorized. 0 Comments“If you have access to a system that wasn’t updated with Ethernet Killer:
Go to System/Library/Extensions/AppleKextExcludeList.kext and copy the working file extension and transfer the file over to your corrupted computer or partition
Turn off System Integrity Protection (SIP) by restarting in recovery mode (command-R) and go under Utility in the top menu and open Terminal app.
Type in “csrutil disable” and return.
Restart computer and you now with be able to delete the bad
AppleKextExcludeList.kext and drop in the good AppleKextExcludeList.kext
Restart and Ethernet will be recognized again.
Turn the SIP back on by doing step 2 and 3 again but type in “csrutil enable”
Update: Apple has published the official fix in this support document.
ExFAT 3: Packing for Travel
Posted December 31st, 2015 by Ryu at 3:05 pm in ExFAT Podcast. 0 CommentsWe barely made it for December.
Daniel and I exchanged some tips and information on packing and preparations for travel.
Links to products mentioned in the podcast are as below;
Anker PowerLine Micro USB (1ft)
And some we forgot to mention;
TP Link TL-WR702N Mini Travel Router
Logitech Keys To Go Ultra Portable Bluetooth Keyboard for iPad
iFixit tears down the Apple Pencil →
Posted November 20th, 2015 by Ryu at 12:31 am in Links. 0 CommentsWhat is this—a logic board for ants? Not quite, but weighing in at a whopping 1.0 gram it’s definitely the smallest we’ve ever seen.
This thing has a freaking logic board (with 4 chips on it) inside! Mind blown.
The pencil is clearly not meant to be opened or repaired; you can’t get inside without destroying the device.
Duh. What else did they expect?
While the teardown’s informative and stuff, there is one less Apple Pencil in the world for someone who really wants one urgently. Maybe they could have waited until stock levels become normal.
