A tale of iPhones – The 4, the 4S and a little bit of the Origin

Yeah yeah I know. I didn’t join the Starhub queue. I had a Starhub guy come to my place to give me my iPhone 4S in the comfort of my living room at 12pm sharp yesterday. Truth be told, I would love to go to the Singtel launch even though I’m not re-contracting with them this year (I alternate between Singtel, my real line, and Starhub, the line I sign for my brother to use, yearly), simply because all their launches have been really well done and enjoyable so far. But well, I’m not in the leagues of the local big-shot bloggers, and I talk shit about local telcos all the time. So no one would want to invite me. As usual.

But whatever.

I love this shot. Don’t you? And it’s not even the full family YET.

Pardon the photo quality. I had to take it with the shittiest camera phone I had at my disposal, for the good stuff’s the subject! (You know which Shitty phone that iS, don’t you?)

Here’s another washed-out pic. Oh so disgusting a camera the Nexus S is.

Starhub’s Prices and Launch Details for iPhone 4S in Singapore

Starhub. Probably the worst service and the worst iPhone prices. Hate them.

Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson is Out in Stores!

In other related news, Steve Jobs’ bio by Walter Isaacson has reached stores everywhere in Singapore. Kinokuniya Singapore is selling all three versions, the original US version with a glossy jacket, a UK version with a matte jacket, and a chinese version that I don’t give a damn about, at 20% off the listed prices. The english versions are at around 45 Singapore dollars each before discount.

Grab yours if you haven’t. This is one book that is worth keeping.

For your info, I have the iBooks version on my iPad and iPhone, the US version being shipped here from the States, and planned to buy the UK version this weekend.

Singtel’s Prices and Launch Details for iPhone 4S in Singapore

And here are the details for Singtel’s launch.

Have already received the news days ago that Singtel’s launch won’t be in Marina Bay Sands this year but rather “in town”, though Suntec won’t be that far off from last year’s location. Parking is a bitch though.

Singtel’s launch starts 12:01am at Suntec Convention Hall 402, strictly appointment only. Booking of appointments start October 26th, tomorrow.

M1’s Prices and Launch Details for iPhone 4S in Singapore

Was really waiting for all carriers to come up with their prices before posting this, but I guess I can’t be bothered to wait for Starhub.

M1 was the earliest with their prices, and these were released since last Friday.

M1’s launch is a first come first served event at 12am at the usual Paragon M1 shop, with no web preorders allowed until the 28th itself, unlike Starhub and Singtel.

Other M1 shops will start selling the iPhone 4S at 7am on 28th October 2011.

Losing Steve Jobs

Losing Steve was personal for me
Not because I’ve seen him before in person, because I never have, and now never will
But because he was probably the biggest influence in my life for the past 8 or so years
And because joining Apple with him in charge, regardless whether he is CEO or not, was the single biggest aim in my life
That now can never be realized

When I bought my first ever Mac back in 2004 it was nothing more than a really nice and interesting computer to me in the first few months
Until I started finding out more about Apple
And Steve
And then I started following Apple
And saw with my own eyes the wonders that Apple, and Him, were capable of
That made me who I am today

Becoming the vice president of MacNUS (the Mac User Group in NUS) was a starting step
But it wasn’t until the following year when I took over the presidency from my good friend Steve (Yang) that things were put into motion for me
I envisioned a school with a lot of Mac users in a world where the majority of Macs were running PowerPC chips
And was always heartened by the fact that my faculty of choice, Arts and Social Sciences, had a large number of Mac users as compared to other faculties
I pushed for chances, implemented lots of new ideas, held talks, seminars, made partnerships with third-party accessories makers, Apple resellers and assisted Apple in so many ways that the then-in-charge of educational sales in Apple South Asia, Eric, told me that he would find me a job in Apple
Most of all though, I made many great friends during that single year, most of whom I am still in constant contact with today

Even after I graduated and past the reins to my trusted aide and friend Hansen, I continued to be constantly involved in things for almost another year
Even after Eric got promoted and suddenly seemed to developed amnesia and have forgotten ever telling me that he’ll find me a job in Apple, I never stopped getting involved in Apple-related stuff
I never stopped trying to join Apple, the Apple that Steve led

Steve was always just “the outstanding and cool CEO of Apple” to most people
But to a smaller group of people, those of us who are always more involved in things, he was a teacher, a philosopher, a leader
His strive for perfection and simplicity greatly influenced those of us in our work and daily life
He taught us that regardless of one’s position in a company, how one will naturally get more involved in the process, because if one has a passion for everything one is creating it is impossible to be just another CEO and just sit around one’s office replying emails or play golf
And most of all, his own beliefs in life have shaped me into the person I am today

Every day I wake up and ask myself if what I am supposed to be doing that day is what I want to be doing on the last day of my life
And all too often that answer was No
But if it continues for quite a number of days, then I have to change things and I usually did
And that is why I do things the way I do, how I am the person I am today
I live by my own wishes, and never bother with how others or society might view me

Steve is the single biggest influence in my life for the past decade

I knew it will be hard when he eventually has to depart, but when it came, all of a sudden yesterday morning at 7 plus, it was unbearable
Totally unbearable
I went to work trying to look as normal as I can
And then I came home last night and cried myself to sleep

Losing Steve is losing the one single person that you live your whole life believing in
Christians call that person God
I call him Steve Jobs

Thank you… for everything…

Possible iPhone 4S / iPhone 5 Launch Date in Singapore…… (Edit: And Oct 28 it is!)

October 28th 2011!!!!

Edit: And October 28 it is. This proves that my sources are still credible.

Possible iPhone 4S Pricing in Singapore

Judging from the various news/rumors circulating around these few days, finally we will be seeing the next iPhone in 3 storage capacities, 16GB, 32GB and for people like me, 64GB. And the news is that we are going to get them at a lower price, namely, the current price for the 16GB will get you a 32GB iPhone 4S / iPhone 5, the current price for the 32GB will get you a 64GB iPhone 4S / iPhone 5. And that brings us to the 16GB model, which will probably be around $130 cheaper than the old 16GB pricing of $480 (Singtel pricing) on contract with the cheapest iPhone-specific plans, such as Singtel’s iFlexi Lite. That is a big deal. Not only because it will make the “current generation iPhone” a lot more attractive for people who aren’t willing to spend over $400 on a phone, it also effectively pushes the “last generation iPhone”‘s pricing down to a possible $200 range.

Judging by the latest exchange rate Apple uses for Singapore, and assuming that carriers keep their current subsidy amounts, I believe we are looking at these possible prices;

Non-Contract iPhones from Apple

16GB iPhone 4S / iPhone 5 – $708
32GB iPhone 4S / iPhone 5 – $838
64GB iPhone 4S / iPhone 5 – $968

8GB iPhone 4 (Plastic Casing, Made in Brazil) – $578

Contract iPhone from Singtel on iFlexi Lite Plan

16GB iPhone 4S / iPhone 5 – $310
32GB iPhone 4S / iPhone 5 – $430
64GB iPhone 4S / iPhone 5 – $550

8GB iPhone 4 (Plastic Casing, Made in Brazil) – $200

Unfortunately, the contract prices will be harder to predict, basically due to the fact that Apple’s profit levels are different on the various models as compared to their sales price, so you will often see a bigger subsidy on the higher end models simply because Singtel and other telcos get the higher end models cheaper.

Also note that I am using “iPhone 4S / iPhone 5” simply because I have no idea what is going to be announced tonight. This is really exciting.

EDITED: Prices above are probably totally wrong due to 2 factors;

1. The US exchange rate has spiked since the last Apple product released with a lower exchange rate – the MacBook Air

2. News about how the capacities are going to double at the same price are totally wrong.

Also, since Apple Singapore has just released prices for the 3GS and the iPhone 4 8GB, we can somehow safely assume that the exchange rate used for the old iPhone 4 prices will be slightly different for the new iPhone 4S.

That means;

Non-Contract iPhones from Apple

iPhone 4S 16GB – 928
iPhone 4S 32GB – 1068
iPhone 4S 64GB – 1208
iPhone 4 8GB – 788 (Apple SG verified)
iPhone 3GS – 548 (Apple SG verified)

Contract iPhone from Singtel on iFlexi Lite Plan (assuming subsidy prices remain the same)

iPhone 4S 16GB – 520
iPhone 4S 32GB – 660
iPhone 4S 64GB – 800

P.S.: Note that contract pricing is a running target and the prices are often different among the different carriers, so they are highly unreliable, but it’s a rough estimates based on current contract pricing.

P.S. Again: I am 20 to 30 dollars off on all the prices. Apple revealed those prices to be as following;

16GB 948
32GB 1088
64GB 1238

Now then the dust has settled……

When the news broke I was in tears.
Not because I think Apple is over, because it’s not.
Not because I think Steve’s condition is worsening, because I really think it isn’t.
Not because I don’t like Tim Cook, because he’s a really cool guy apparently.
But because Steve Jobs is no longer listed as the leader, even if He still is, as the Chairman of the Apple board.
And because maybe never again will we see another Steve note, although I really hope I’m wrong about this.
My adoration and affections for everything Apple stems from the very fact that I idolized Steve Jobs to the point of obsession.
The affection won’t stop now, definitely.
For Apple, the company today, is Steve Jobs.
And Steve Jobs is Apple.
Even if the listed CEO isn’t Him.
You see the photo of Steve on my blog?
