The Easiest Ways to Disable Data on your iPhone 3G / 3GS

This is for those poor souls who got served a 200SGD bill from Singtel because they didn’t read my article on the dangers of getting an iPhone without a data plan or read it way too late.

To disable data on your iPhone if you don’t have a data plan, the easiest way is to install bossprefs via Cydia and turn off edge and 3G, if you have a jailbroken iPhone.

For those of you purists who rock original unmodified iPhone software, the best way is to mess up the APN settings.

Under Settings>General>Network>Cellular Data Network>Advanced, change the settings from this;

APN: e-ideas
Username:
Password:

to something like this;

APN: xxxxxx
Username:yyyyyyyy
Password: zzzzzzzzz

Remember, it is not enough if you just turn off the 3G in the settings. All it does when you turn off the 3G is to revert to Edge/GRPS in order to save battery power.

Edit: Ever since iPhone 3.0 came out, many iPhone users, particularly Starhub ones, have complaint that changing the APN settings no longer stop the 3G/GRPS data from working. The only way is to call up Starhub, and tell them that you want to cancel your GPRS service with immediate effect.

Why people should stop whining about getting their apps rejected from the App Store

Great article by Applematters on just why people should just stop whining about having apps like Mail and iTunes alternatives rejected from the iPhone App Store. If you want to complain so much, let me offer you some alternative platforms, the darkside platform called Windows Mobile, the only-just-recently-caught-on-despite-so-many-years-of-development Symbian platform, and the we-want-to-be-apple-and-we-hate-microsoft Google Android platform.

You can find the article here.

Microsoft’s “I’m a PC” ads – Paid by Microsoft, Created FOR Microsoft, by Mac users

Cult of Mac reports that metadata on the creative copy of the photos appearing on Microsoft’s “I’m a PC” website reveals that they were made on Macs running CS3. When exposed, Microsoft scrambled to destroy the metadata overnight.

Here’s the picture proof.

What can I say? Seems that Microsoft’s own ads aren’t convincing enough for their ad agencies to be using Vista/XP.

Not to be political here, but just look at this. Nice.

Tech65’s 65 bits podcast No. 87: Hadoken

Sorry for posting so so so so so so so late!
But yeah, the guys at tech65 invited me again to be on their show last Saturday, and while the podcast has been posted since Monday, I have yet to mention it here.

So, here it is!

Fake 4th gen iPod Nano “leaked image”

How fake? Totally fake. Whoever took this picture just used one of those fake Chinese-made “MP4” Nano-lookalikes available for cheap in Sim Lim Square and stuffed it in a 2nd Gen Nano case.

Big deal.

Too fake.

Edit: For the moron who called me an idiot while saying that the above photograph is real, take a look at this photo of the REAL NANO 4G from engadget. Unless you are seriously blind I’m pretty sure you can tell the damn difference.

Mojave: Microsoft to all Windows users “Haha you are all freaking idiots!”

Old news, but interesting nonetheless.

Microsoft Watch(a M$ fanboi site essentially)’s Joe Wilcox comes up with five reasons why the “Mojave Experiment” by Microsoft’s attempt to revive Vista’s image failed terribly.

In his own words;

“1. Microsoft treats its customers like they’re stupid.
2. Microsoft embarrasses Mojave participates.
3. The marketing campaign blames customers for Vista’s problems.
4. Microsoft denies there is a real problem.
5. Mojave seethes with arrogance. (Microsoft:’If we trick people, they will see just how stupid they are.’)”

There you have it, another perfect example of classic Microsoft at its works. They treat all users as idiots to exploit and exploit and exploit and exploit for money.

Here’s another article by Computerworld stating the failure of the Mojave Experiment.“Another sign that Microsoft doesn’t get it”.

And you know what? Microsoft don’t care. So long they have their long term service contracts with businesses, they are going to stay super profitable always. “You don’t like your OS? You can go suck it!”, says Microsoft.

Rumors, more rumors

Did I say I was lazy? I am.

Just to “do my job” and provide a list of Apple rumors out there right now.

1. Apple Special Event on Sep 9th.

2. Revamped iPod line, huge price drops for all iPods, significant design changes for iPod Nano (as usual).

3. MacBook, MacBook Pro redesigns. All Aluminum and glass construction, Apple-designed logic boards.

4. MacBook Air 2nd generation.

5. iTunes 8.

Doesn’t it sound like the whole of Apple’s lineup is going to change?

Sounds cool. As I’ve said, I’m lazy. Go google for more info on the various rumors.

GadgetDotRed’s Report on Singtel iPhone Launch

Since I’m still too lazy to do a write-up on the Singtel iPhone launch, I’ll just link all of you to GadgetDotRed’s coverage for now.
